West and Main Streets
This first edition of the Historical Society publication issued in
October of 1970, displays on its cover an 1859 photo of the
intersection of West and Main Street.
Its opening page features a story of Vermont Coins tracing the
beginnings of the State and the issue of its own currency. A
sampling of these coins were illustrated and shown by Mr. Eugene
R. Kosche who was Registrar and Assistant Curator of the
Bennington Museum. The article is illustrated and written by
Berenice R. Tuttle.
On the facing side is a photograph, undated, showing a Rutland
Banner, with a group of unidentified men, challenging readers to
identify them as possible past Rutland Community members.
Listed as well are the members of the Society’s Board, with a
column by the then current president of the Board, Fred Elwert, as
well as a “Who’s Who” that includes Judge Milford Smith at the
time Director of the Society. Other Directors are listed as well.
